The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

'Home of the Future' needs a new home

The home of the future is looking for a new home.

BC Hydro has listed a 680-square-foot, uber-green, 'Home of the Future' on the B.C. Bid website. The home was part of Hydro's Power Smart Village installation that was displayed on the lawn of its downtown Vancouver office during the Olympics.

The unit is made of two shipping containers, designed with locally-sourced materials and includes such green features as solar panels, smart meters and energy-efficient appliances.

According to BC Hydro's request for proposals, it wishes to donate the home to a non-profit, charity or community organization. The successful proponent must be able to manage and cover the costs of dismantling, removing, siting and re-assembling the home and all its components -- by July 16. The home comes 'as is' except for the green wall, furniture and plants.
