The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

MLAs declared gifts received, including travel and Olympic tickets

A Liberal backbench MLA took $14,500 worth of trips to China and Korea, the NDP's environment critic travelled to Denmark on a union's tab and a Liberal MLA from the Peace River attended the Olympic gold medal women's hockey game courtesy of Encana Corporation.

The gifts are recorded in the annual public disclosure statements vetted by Conflict of Interest Commissioner Paul Fraser and released Dec. 17.

Harry Bloy, who represents Burnaby-Lougheed for the Liberals, declared the greatest value of gifts. Bloy made four separate trips to China, with money coming from the cities he visited, the Canada Asia Business Network, the government of Korea and his riding association.

Public Eye website has analysis and Bloy's comments here.

The NDP's Rob Fleming traveled to the UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark in December, 2009. The flight and accommodation were paid for by the United Steelworkers Union and the Blue-Green Alliance.

And Peace River North MLA Patt Pimm and a guest enjoyed the women's gold medal game, which Canada won, a gift from Encana worth $650.

Many of the MLAs also received gifts of Olympic clothing—jackets, tuques and shirts--from VANOC and its CEO John Furlong, the declared value of which ranged from $375 to $500.
