The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Four innocent victims in Gastown shooting

Four late night revelers appear to be the unfortunate innocent victims of a brazen shooting in Gastown in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Vancouver police confirmed that four people – three females and a male – were standing around at the corner of Richards and Water streets around 2 a.m. Sunday when two men came up and “opened fire” on them.

All four ended up in hospital, though the most serious injury appears to be a gunshot wound to the wrist of a woman that requires surgery.

Const. Jana McGuinness said the most disturbing part of the incident is that it appears to be completely random.

“It looks like we’re dealing with innocent victims,” McGuinness told media. “These are the calls we always dread.”

Fully armed emergency response team officers managed to arrest both suspects – males in their late-20s – within 20 minutes of the shooting.

Police spent the rest of the morning canvassing the crime scene, marking evidence and picking shell casings off the busy Gastown corner.

McGuinness said the suspects are known to police, but couldn’t say whether they have gang affiliations.

On Friday, police issued a unique public warning suggesting there was information to believe gang violence was a distinct possibility in the city during Halloween weekend.

Vancouver police increased their presence to respond to the vague threat, but McGuinness could not say whether this shooting is related in any way.

Apart of the shooting, police said Friday and Saturday nights were uneventful in terms of violence.
