The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Canwest gets a new name: Postmedia Network Inc.

The newspaper chain formerly known as Canwest shall henceforth be called Postmedia Network Inc. That decree was emailed today to staffers at the organization’s newspapers by Paul Godfrey, whose group purchased Canwest’s newspaper holdings for $1.1 billion in the spring.

Here is the memo:

I know it has been the question on everyone’s mind – what will our new company be called? Somehow AdHoc Committee doesn’t really roll off the tongue. Many, many people from across this company and beyond gave a lot of thought to what our new name should be. I am impressed with the creativity and thought put into how we could best reflect the promise and opportunities that lie ahead as we became Canada’s newest media powerhouse. I want to thank everyone for sending me your thoughts and suggestions.

What we arrived at was a name that looks to both the past and the future. It highlights the journey of our industry and our brands. It showcases the evolution of the technologies that we use to move news and information to our readers and audiences. And it represents our strong value proposition to marketers, advertisers and our partners.

Once all the paperwork is wrapped up, sometime in the next couple of weeks, our new company will be called: Postmedia Network Inc.

From the earliest days of information delivery by post, to the current online world of posting news and information online as it happens and looking ahead to the constant evolution in a post-media universe, our new name reflects both the strong legacy and the exciting future of media as we become a new company.

The word “network” also represents who we are. Most obvious is our online network of properties but also the interconnectedness of our people, brands and communities. The network of access points for our readers includes print, online and mobile which is also a valuable network for marketers and advertisers to tap into and deliver their messages.

This is only the first of what I promise will be many exciting announcements to come. But I wanted to be sure you had the earliest possible glimpse at what the future holds. We are at the beginning of a new company with a new name and an ongoing commitment to transforming our business and our culture.

The cloud we have all been under through the restructuring process has been a burden for everyone. I hope you find this announcement gives you something to look forward to. I am excited about what the future holds for Postmedia Network and having the opportunity to meet more of you as we embark on the transition in the weeks and months to come.

With my best regards,

Paul V. Godfrey,

C.M.
President and C.E.O.
