The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Wilderness Committee goes on attack against incinerators

The Wilderness Committee hopes a light-hearted approach will get people thinking about the very serious issue of garbage incinerators with a new viral campaign.

The committee launched their "Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Breath" video on YouTube Tuesday, urging the public to chime in on Metro Vancouver's proposed waste management options before it's too late.

One of the options is an incineration facility that environmentalists believe would pump more emissions and toxins into the environment despite claims that the technology is safe.

The video, which presents an anti-incineration argument in a cheeky, easy to digest way, is meant to get people interested in the debate, according to Wilderness Committee healthy communities campaigner Ben West.

"It's a really serious issue but we tried to lighten things up," said West. "There's kind of two sides to it; people say they care about climate change and the environment but garbage is one of the main ways we engage with the environment on a daily basis."

Two months of public consultations on Metro Vancouver's draft solid waste management plan just wrapped up, but West said it's not too late to be heard.

"A lot of people think it was just a Metro Vancouver sales pitch but in this case I think they're interested in what people think," he said. "A lot of e-mails and letters can still make a difference."
