The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Fight HST recall campaign gathers steam

Recruiting canvassers to advance the MLA recall efforts is ahead of schedule, the lead organizer of the Fight HST camp said Monday.

More than 2,360 canvassers have registered in the reality TV-like political campaign where the ridings with the most volunteers will get the nod to hold the first recall campaigns across the province.

Oak Bay-Gordon Head MLA Ida Chong tops the at-risk list with 178 canvassers registered for her riding.

“What’s most encouraging is a lot of those numbers are coming out of about 10 of the 18 ridings,” said Fight HST’s Chris Delaney. “There’s a good 10 of them that I think are very, very serious about organizing and the other eight of them are struggling to get organized.”

With four weeks left in the campaign Cariboo-Chilcotin has risen in the ranks to 158 volunteers, a prospect that has Delaney wondering if a winter campaign is best suited for the Northern B.C. region.

“Some people up there are pretty robust and it might not be a problem,” he said. “It might not be a problem.”

Three recall campaigns will be launched in January. Lessons learned will be applied in following campaigns contested one riding at a time.
