The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Eco-Maverick Wiebo Ludwig unfazed by court ruling

A Grand Prairie provincial court judge has dismissed Wiebo Ludwig's four-page brief seeking to nullify the peace bond application issued against him by Encana and Canadian Superior Energy.

Ludwig didn't attend the hearing last Friday, choosing instead to work on his farm.

Ludwig told The Tyee that he, along with his son Ben and family friend Richard Boonstra, are "being asked to enter into a peace bond to keep 200 yards away from all the pipelines and installations. Which is impossible, because we're surrounded by the crap, we wouldn't even be able to leave to go to town."

The Grand Prairie court decision is the latest event in Ludwig's struggle with gas companies that has spanned two decades. Ludwig has continually claimed that emissions from gas sites cause serious damage to the health of his family. He was arrested last January weeks before the Olympics in connection with the most recent series of pipeline bombings south of Dawson Creek.

He went on to say that he is tired of being in the spotlight. "The Gulf spill will do enough promoting that I can lay back for awhile. It’s a tragedy and so is the reaction of industry..."

He said he believes the recent move by Encana and CSE is connected to these previous allegations. "I wrote that public open letter to the bomber. They thought it was a bit too intimate, that I must at least know him if I'm not involved."

Ludwig says this most recent incident cost him $2,000 in legal fees.

The court date for the peace bond hearing is scheduled for January 24, 2011.
