Gordon Campbell’s Liberal empire is falling one domino at a time, according to former premier Bill Vander Zalm.
Vander Zalm has been leading the campaign against the Harmonized Sales Tax from the start and believes the resignation of top cabinet member - and Peace River South MLA - Blair Lekstrom over the tax is a sign of what’s to come.
“I don’t think [Campbell] will be there next November, he wouldn’t have a hope,” Vander Zalm told 24 hours.
The former leader of the Social Credit Party leader says Lekstrom and some of other Liberal party MLAs don’t have a chance of re-election in ridings because of the public opposition to the tax.
The Liberals needs to consider their options carefully, he said.
“Anything is possible,” he said. “It’s not totally surprising to see this happen and there could be more. But some many of them have dug in so hard on the HST it’ll be difficult for them to leave.”
In the meantime, organizers of the Fight HST campaign have spoken with Elections B.C. and have agreed to submit their petition – collecting at least 10 per cent of registered voters in each of B.C.’s 85 ridings – June 30.
