The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Panel to review BC NDP's election flop announced soon

The five individuals tasked with reviewing why the provincial New Democratic Party flopped in the May 14 election will be announced soon.

NDP leader Adrian Dix ordered a review of the party's campaign performance after the BC Liberals' stunning win, which saw the governing party scoop up 49 seats over the NDP's 34. Polls had predicted a sizeable NDP win in the weeks and months before election day.

Compared to 2009, this election the NDP dropped in its share of the popular vote, attracted fewer total voters, and lost seats, while its leader ran against an unpopular premier.

According to a press release from the party's provincial secretary today, the reviewers have a "broad mandate" that includes:

- To evaluate the 2013 campaign with a view to determining the reasons for the loss including a review and assessment of the strategies and tactics of the BC NDP 2013 campaign.

- To identify the successes that should be built upon.

- To recommend steps to make improvements and prepare a winning strategy in 2017.

- To include constituency preparation, technical and logistical preparations, communications, fundraising, central campaign decision making, selection of campaign leadership, advertising and media relations, ethnic outreach, voter contact, candidate selection, relationship between the central and local campaigns, platform and policy development, role of the leader, stakeholder relations including with community leaders, business, social movement, ethnic communities, environmental movement, affiliated unions, and labour movement.

- To review and assess the BC NDP's broader relationship with the voters of British Columbia including an examination the BC NDP's base of support compared to the changing demographics of the population and the impact of vote splitting with other parties.

The five reviewers, who can't have been involved in the 2013 campaign, will include representatives from labour, more than one woman and, "ideally" someone from outside of the province, according to today's statement.
