Members of Lax Kw'alaams First Nation made national news headlines in May 2015 after rejecting a $1-billion offer from Malaysian multinational Petronas in exchange for consent to build a massive liquefied natural gas terminal on B.C.'s northwest coast.
The project is planned for Lelu Island, surrounded by waters that some scientists have deemed critical for the rearing of millions of wild B.C. salmon.
A year on, Petronas still aims to build its terminal despite a recent declaration of opposition signed by around 300 hereditary and election First Nations leaders, scientists, politicians, commercial and sport fishers, and other northern residents.
Now, the resistance of Lax Kw'alaams is the subject of a new short documentary, "A Last Stand for Lelu," premiering Feb. 15 at the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival.
The 24-minute film is produced and directed by Farhan Umedaly (VoVo Productions) and Tamo Campos (Beyond Boarding). Check out the short preview above.
