The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Missing women inquiry dates announced for northern B.C.

The Missing Women Commission of Inquiry has announced the dates and locations for community forums in northern B.C. The forums are part of the research phase of the inquiry before hearings begin in October.

The commission will hold seven meetings in four days in Prince Rupert, Terrace, Kitwanga, Smithers and Hazelton, B.C., Sept. 12 to Sept. 15. Additional meetings may be added during the week of Sept. 19, said Chris Freimond, media spokesperson for the commission.

The forums will be a chance for community members in northern B.C. to give the commission input, which will help inform the commission's report and recommendations, according to the media release.

At the beginning of August, Chief Jackie Thomas of the Saik'uz First Nation near Vanderhoof in northeast B.C. said the inquiry will not be welcome in her community because she believes the commission will not be a meaningful exercise.
