New alliances spout in wake of COPE-Vision deal

More alliances have emerged in the wake of COPE's final blessing to the long-awaited COPE-Vision agreement, ratified on Sunday.

Vision Vancouver park board hopeful Aaron Jasper has announced that he will officially endorse Council of Progressive Electors (COPE) park board commissioner Spencer Herbert in Herbert's bid for NDP nomination in the upcoming Vancouver Burrard by-election and the May 2009 provincial election, where Herbert seeks a provincial NDP spot for Vancouver West End. Herbert is endorsing Jasper for Vision park board.

Jasper and Herbert have worked together closely over the last four years dealing with issues of homelessness, the West End's precarious rental market , the preservation of St. Paul's Hospital , and the revitalization of downtown parks. "It's really important for me to make sure that we have activists stepping up to the plate to work on some of these issues," says Jasper.

"I've been kind of an unofficial COPE-Vision member since the split ages ago," says Herbert, adding that COPE and Vision don't have differences on park board issues. "For the last three years, Loretta Woodcock and myself have been unofficial COPE-Vision park board members."

On the school board front, Vision Vancouver hopefuls Stepan Vdovine, Mike Lombardi , Helesia Luke, and Patti Bacchus have publicly announced their support of COPE members joining them in their quest to "take back Broadway and Fir."

Meanwhile, COPE's Imtiaz Popat announced yesterday that he will be switching from seeking a park board nomination to aiming for spot on school board, where COPE will run five seats.
