Harper government yanked Sierra Club climate grant

The Sierra Club of Canada's B.C. Chapter has been forced to launch a new fund raising campaign to replace a federal grant Stephen Harper's Conservative government cancelled earlier this month.

The $100,000 grant was to help the Sierra Club organize local carbon emission reduction clubs, activist circles that would have helped British Columbians reduce their carbon footprint. Environment Canada cancelled the grant, an act some environmentalists denounced as “vengeful.”

Green Party national leader Elizabeth May, a vocal critic of Conservative environmental policies, is a former executive director of the national Sierra Club of Canada.

Government officials signed the contract in May, but recently cancelled it “without warning or cause,” said a September 19 statement from Kathryn Molloy, executive director of the Sierra Club's B.C. wing.

Neither Environment Minister John Baird nor Chris Day, a media spokesman in Minister Baird’s office, responded to calls by deadline.
