The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Dosanjh promises BC agenda, but offers few specifics

A Liberal government in Ottawa would protect Vancouver's supervised injection site and restore millions in recent cuts to federal arts programs, the Grits' senior MP in Vancouver promised yesterday.

But a partial platform the Liberals are touting as the social issues chunk of its "made in B.C." agenda appears short on specifics and virtually devoid of numbers.

One promise comes attached with a dollar figure: A $15-million investment in arts related to the 2010 Olympics. The Libs also promise to restore millions in funding to arts and culture programs recently cut by the Conservatives.

Other more numerically challenged promises include "sustained funding and licensing" for Insite, the construction of an "India Gate" in Surrey and Vancouver's Punjabi Markets, the creation of a federal guns-and-gangs taskforce and an unspecified investment in B.C.'s day-care system.

Vancouver South MP Ujjal Dosanjh told reporters yesterday the dollar amounts will follow as part of a national platform. But he also appeared to warn against expecting huge investments.

"This [Conservative] government has wrecked the fiscal framework of Canada," Dosanjh said. "We are teetering on the edge of a deficit. We have to take that into account but we are firmly committed to advancing Canada on that path."
