Class-action lawsuit seeks $75M over oil spill into Red Deer River

CALGARY -- A lawyer is filing a class-action lawsuit over a recent oil spill in central Alberta.

Tony Merchant says the claim is seeking $75 million in damages against Plains Midstream Canada.

A section of pipeline owned by the company leaked June 7 near the community of Sundre, spilling up to 475,000 litres of light sour crude into the Red Dear River.

High river levels flushed most of the oil downstream into Gleniffer Lake, a man-made reservoir and popular recreational area.

An Airdrie couple who own two lots at a nearby RV park are named as plaintiffs in the suit.

Suzanne and Darin Rieger claim the spill has decreased the value of their properties.
