The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Salmon scientist says she hasn't been muzzled by DFO

VANCOUVER - A molecular geneticist says she hasn't been stopped from publishing her research into the decline of the Fraser River sockeye fishery, even though some activists have suggested she has been muzzled by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Kristi Miller told a federal inquiry into the fishery that federal officials have told her not to speak to the public so that she could reserve her comments for the inquiry.

And Miller says she was told not to attend one scientific meeting but the demand was made of other colleagues, too.

The scientist says the integrity of science has been upheld at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Miller is testifying today about the role diseases have played in the decline of the Fraser River's stocks.

Critics of fish farms have suggested her research will show a link between diseases and fish farms.
