The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Is Stephen Harper tiger chow?

Near the end of a momentous day in Canadian history, it appears that Prime Minister Stephen Harper has been riding a tiger ever since he and the Canadian Alliance took over the old Progressive Conservatives.

On the same day that the Liberals, New Democrats, and Bloc Quebecois announced their coalition, some Conservatives have gone online to call for a new leader. Having fallen off the Tory tiger, Harper begins to look like cat food.

The Hook has already noted a blog calling for Jim Prentice to take the leadership. A commenter has kindly provided the link to another new site, Draft John Baird, with the same goal in mind.

Most Conservatives, judging by The Blogging Tories, are miserably unhappy but still supporting Harper. Given the speed of events this week, however, Stephen Harper could well meet the ghost of Dalton Camp in the lobby of the House of Commons before the weekend.

The Hook will continue to cover the Canadian blogosphere’s reaction to the Christmas Surprise.
