The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

'We're making great progress' on HST: Vander Zalm

Results for the Fight HST campaign could come faster in the Lower Mainland, said the leader of the grassroots movement.

As of Sunday, 145,549 people had signed a petition to repeal the incoming Harmonized Sales Tax and about a quarter of electoral districts have met or exceed Elections B.C.’s threshold for passage of 10 per cent of registered voter signatures.

“We’re making great progress,” said organizer Bill Vander Zalm. “We need to do a whole lot more in the Lower Mainland largely because we have so many constituencies that people don’t know where to go.”

Delta North, North Vancouver-Seymour and Surrey-White Rock are among a small handful of Lower Mainland ridings identified by organizers as posting 3,000 or more signatures and reaching the 10 per cent threshold.

Erecting a booth at a central location such as Metropolis at Metrotown in Burnaby would be difficult to maintain, Vander Zalm explained, because people from neighbouring constituencies would show up looking to sign on.

Managing more than 6,700 volunteers is another issue British Columbia’s former premier and his inner circle are working on.

“They have jobs, and places to go, and things to do so they’re only available now and again,” he said.

The seasoned campaigner said weekends would be when campaign drives kick into high gear.
