Libs win historic third term as James concedes

The BC Liberals appear to have won a historic third term as the B.C. government.

In a speech that emphasized the need for all parties to work together on the problems that face the province, Carole James conceded defeat to Gordon Campbell and pledged the NDP would continue to work for the ailing forestry sector, seniors, children and the environment.

"We cannot go forward as a people if we are divided," James said.

With the polls closed just more than an hour, the CBC projected the BC Liberals "will officially be declared the winner when the final votes counting is complete."

Canadian Press reported the Liberals garnering 46 per cent of the popular vote, NDP, 42 per cent, and the Green Party, eight, less than their 2005 result.

"With more than 25 per cent of polls reporting," said the CBC, "Liberals were ahead in 50 ridings, having been elected in 24. The NDP led in only 36 ridings, with New Democrats elected in 18 of those."

To win a majority, a party must win in at least 43 ridings.

The Green Party's Jane Sterk appears to have come in third in Esquimalt-Royal Roads, behind Maurine Karagianis (elected, NDP) and Carl Ratsoy.

NDP leader Carole James appears to have been re-elected in Victoria-Beacon Hill. BC Liberal leader Gordon Campbell appears to have outpaced a strong challenge from NDP Mel Lehan.

Two incumbents are still battling for their political lives. In Delta South Attorney General Wally Oppal is currently winning by 35 votes over Independent Vicki Huntington. In Oak Bay-Gordon Head, Ida Chong still fighting a strong challenge from Jessica Van de Veen.

CBC Radio reported the Single-Transferable Vote campaign has been defeated.
