The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Ipsos poll indicates BC Liberals have eight-point lead

A new Ipsos Reid poll gives the Liberals an eight-point lead over the New Democrats as Tuesday’s B.C. election approaches.

Global TV reported that the poll, conducted for Global and the Vancouver Sun, gives the following results:

Liberals, 47 per cent; NDP, 39 per cent; Green party 10 per cent.

That compares to an Angus Reid Strategies poll released Thursday evening that gave the Liberals a two-percentage-point lead and a Mustel Group poll released earlier Thursday that gave the Liberals a nine-point lead.

Although B.C. election polling has been very volatile over the last nine months, Ipsos’s numbers have been stable. The new Ipsos poll has the Liberals up one point since March, when the company last published a horserace poll.

The NDP is up four points and the Greens are down five points since March.

The poll suggests that Liberal voters may be more firm in their choice of party. While 15 per cent of decided Liberal supporters said they could switch allegiance before Election Day, 24 per cent of New Democrat supporters said they might waver.

The poll is based on 800 telephone interviews conducted between May 4 and 7. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
