The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

North Vancouver candidates start campaigning online

As North Vancouver constituencies elect their candidates, Liberal and NDP campaigners are going online...but tentatively, awkwardly, and not all at once.

In North Vancouver-Seymour, Maureen (Mo) Norton has been quick to create her own blog. So far, however, the posts consist chiefly of NDP news releases.

Her opponent, longtime Liberal incumbent Daniel Jarvis, has a regular website, also featuring party news releases as "news." But his home page makes no mention of the Liberal Party. Neither does his bio page.

In North Vancouver-Lonsdale, the Liberal candidate is Naomi Yamamoto, who recently beat ex-MP Don Bell for the nomination. Yamamoto as yet has no website.

Former North Van District mayor Janice Harris appears to be the only person seeking the NDP nomination for Lonsdale. As yet she has no website.

The NDP still has no candidate in West Vancouver-Capilano, which includes part of North Vancouver. Traditionally a secure Liberal seat, it's been held since 2001 by Ralph Sultan. Sultan's website needs editing ("Meet Ralph" and "About Ralph" have identical text). Unlike Jarvis's website, it's evidently a standard Liberal Party template, complete with the campaign slogan "Keep BC Strong."

Excerpt for Lonsdale, North Vancouver ridings rarely change hands. So it's unlikely that candidates' websites will make much difference in determining the outcomes. Still, it will be interesting to see how these and other provincial candidates use the medium when their campaigns really get going.
