The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Tyee readers beef up event list for National Aboriginal Day (Sat. June 21)

On Monday June 9, The Tyee launched a contest in celebration of National Aboriginal Day, which is this Saturday, June 21.

In addition to information about the prizes (two sets of family passes to each of Klahowya Village in Stanley Park, and the Royal BC Museum's Our Living Languages exhibit in Victoria), the contest page includes a great list of events for those still planning their weekend.

(The contest is live until midnight on Saturday, June 21 -- you still have a good chance if you enter now.)

As part of the contest outreach, we asked readers to tell us about National Aboriginal Day events in their community. We got lots of new listings and links, and updated the list Tuesday afternoon. Thanks everyone! Though it's still far from a complete listing of B.C. or Canadian events -- that would be a herculean task -- you've made it much richer.

In addition to sending us information about specific National Aboriginal Day public events, we had some lovely notes. Here's a small sampling:

Kris A: "I'll spend my day getting married to my partner of eight years! It'll be the best Aboriginal Day celebration I've ever been to!"

---

Una B welcomes all to "The Life Celebration of Marie Joseph, beloved mother of Qayqayt New Westminster Chief Rhonda Larrabee."
Date: June 25, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Location: New Westminster Public Library, 716 6th Ave N.W.

---

Tracy M: "Where we come from Klemtu (Clam-too) we have a parade, potluck dinner with our traditional foods salmon, clams, seaweed, halibut, deer, cod, seal, and cockles. Then there is a night of traditional cultural songs and dances."

---

Lynda M: My family of seven (of which I am the grandmother) is privileged to attend the Pow Wow at the Songhees First Nations on the 21st! We will also head downtown for the celebrations, art and music!

---

Banchi H: Nuxalk Radio 91.1 FM (Bella Coola) is launching si7mt (summer solstice) June 21, 2014. Join us at our official launch & open house. In-person in Bella Coola or listen to us via live online radio stream: http://www.nuxalkradio.com
Date and time: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, June 21
Location: Trailer #3, Mackenzie St., Nuxalk Territory (Bella Coola)

Happy National Aboriginal Day from The Tyee.
