The same day as Kamloops Daily News announced it would shut down within 60 days, its competitor responded by ramping up its publishing frequency.
Aberdeen Publishing, the owner of Kamloops This Week, said it's bolstering its publication frequency starting Jan. 17 from twice to three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.*
"It was very surprising to hear of the impending closure of a great competitor in the Kamloops Daily News," said Kamloops This Week publisher Kelly Hall in an article. "Media in general are challenged on a daily basis. You have to look closely at your business model and you have to move quickly when you are faced with challenges."
Faced with declining revenues, Kamloops Daily News is shutting down after more than 80 years of publication.
Glacier Media, the parent company of the Kamloops Daily News, said it will close the B.C. newspaper within the next 60 days for economic reasons. The Canadian Association of Journalists called the newspaper's closure the latest in a "disturbing trend."
"It extinguishes a voice in the media landscape in communities where the choices are already few," CAJ president Hugo Rodrigues said in a press release. "The CAJ understands the financial challenges involved in producing high-quality local news and information that advertisers and subscribers are willing to pay for. However, it's a sad day for the state of media and journalism in Canada when the easy choice is to close up shop and walk away rather than find other ways of continuing to serve a community in some fashion."
