The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

What are Tyee readers' transit priorities? Barometer poll results are in…

A Broadway corridor SkyTrain line, Surrey light rapid transit, and improvements to BC Ferries: those are the transportation issues Tyee readers want the provincial government to focus on this election.

The Barometer, The Tyee's weekly election issues poll, kicked off April 15 asking: "What should our regional transportation priorities be?" Over 800 of you answered. Thank you!

Here's what you thought…

Over one-quarter of respondents listed the Broadway corridor SkyTrain as their top pick, with the creation of light rapid transit in Surrey and improvements to BC Ferries service and pricing coming in as second and third respectively.

The priorities shifted somewhat with voters' second choices: over one-fifth wanted to see better bus service, while Surrey and Broadway remained top picks.

When breaking down the responses by age group, the priorities for people over 35 mirrored the overall results (This group represented 75 per cent of respondents), while in the under 35 category favoured the Broadway corridor SkyTrain as its top choice 50 per cent of the time. Cycling infrastructure also made it into the top three in this age group.

The poll gave respondents the opportunity to voice their transportation desires outside of the provided options, too. Demands for increased rail stood out in areas as far and wide as Victoria, Vancouver Island, Chilliwack, the Fraser Valley, the Okanagan and Highway 16.

Other common themes included more connectivity to areas outside of Metro Vancouver, completion of the Evergreen SkyTrain line and removal of the Port Mann Bridge toll.

Up this week: a two-question poll on the best way to increase youth voter engagement.
