The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

New voter? New address? Elections BC asks: Are you on the list?

Elections BC is making a voter list and checking it twice.

It's enumeration season, which means the provincial election agency has put out the official call to new voters to register and veteran voters to update their information. Enumeration improves the accuracy of the provincial voter list -- particularly important in B.C., which has a high voter mobility rate.

And there are still a number of unregistered voters smattered across the province. Statistics show that as of April 2012, B.C. had an estimated 3.276 million eligible voters, but as of earlier this month, just 3.145 million voters were registered.

Beginning this week until March 15, over 1.9 million notices will be mailed to B.C. residents asking voters to register or update their information online or over the phone.

In March, Elections BC reps will appear at public venues across the province, including shopping centres, libraries and and campuses to register voters. If you live in a new subdivision or residential complex, you may even get a knock on your door.

The Elections BC site has a riding-by-riding list of those venues, where you can talk to officials and update your info in person.

The agency is also making an effort to reach out to residents who are historically under-represented on the voters list. Starting in April, Elections BC officials will visit homeless shelters, social service agencies and long-term care homes to sign up residents.
