A Trip to Tahltan Territory, Where BC Bought Out Coal Licences

Submitted by Tyee staff, 8 May 2015

This week, the B.C. government paid $18.3 million to buy up 61 coal mining licences from Fortune Minerals and POSCO Canada Ltd. The purchase stalls the companies' coal mining developments on Tahltan traditional territory for the next 10 years.

The Globe and Mail called the transaction "a unique solution to head off conflict between a First Nations community and the developers." In light of this news, the filmmaking collective Beyond Boarding released this 15-minute journey to the important salmon-bearing headwaters.
