Daredevil Ken Carter wanted to jump the St. Lawrence River in a rocket-powered Lincoln Continental. Mark Haney wanted to compose the perfect musical narrative for Carter's story. Director John Bolton wanted to bring these passions together in what he's calling a "musical docudrama."
Aim for the Roses is one of the films kicking off Vancouver's DOXA Documentary Film Festival on May 5. Frederick Blichert, who's been reviewing DOXA films for The Tyee, wrote that the title "implies something beautiful and delicate, but the reality is wilder and more dangerous."
The fusion of different obsessions in the film has been called weirdly Canadian -- featuring high-speed retro cars and a music from a double bass -- but they come together in both men's quests for glory.
The film plays May 5, 2016 at 7 p.m. and May 15 at 3 p.m. More information on locations and tickets here.
