Asian Density and Canadian Sprawl: Kowloon vs. Richmond in Images

Greg Girard photographs an ethnic suburb after spending about three decades in cosmopolitan Asia.

Submitted by Tyee Staff, 6 Sep 2017

As a teenager from suburban Burnaby, Greg Girard prowled the streets of Vancouver with his camera in the 1970s and early ‘80s, years before he became the renowned photographer known for capturing Asia’s hyper-urbanization. The Tyee featured an interview with Girard, who inspired many works in the cyberpunk genre, last spring on his Vancouver images.

Girard returned to Vancouver in 2011 after almost three decades in Asia, and one of his more recent projects was Richmond/Kowloon, which documents life in two communities often overshadowed by their better-known neighbours Vancouver and Hong Kong.

In this video interview by the Richmond Art Gallery, Girard talks about the two cities over images from both. Dense Kowloon is contrasted with Richmond’s malls and bungalows.
