Neon Returns to Vancouver After City Tried to Make It Go Away

Passing on the craft of neon-bending from one generation to the next.

Submitted by Tyee Staff, 14 Nov 2017

“A lot of people think neon is made by machines, but it’s all handcrafted.”

Andrew Hibbs knew that at a young age. He grew up watching his father bend neon.

At the peak of neon in Vancouver, there were 90,000 neon signs, one for every 18 people in the city. But city hall cracked down on the signs, feeling the lights were taking away from the natural beauty of Vancouver.

But there’s a renewed, nostalgic interest in neon. Hibbs, who took over his father’s business, runs Endeavour Neon, and is behind many new, iconic signs in the city.

Check out Hibbs’ story in this video supported by TELUS STORYHIVE.
