Many cities are trying to move away from the car and encourage more walking, biking, and transit. But what might that end result look like?
They only need look to Nijmegen, a city of about 169,000 in the Netherlands, that’s almost done away with cars altogether.
In the city centre, about 60 per cent of trips are made on bike. (A bonus: the city is nice and flat.) Only essential motor traffic is allowed, like buses and deliveries.
Everyone is exposed to bikes at a young age, from toddlers who have a seat on their parents’ bikes to children who learn how to ride on two wheels very early.
Streetfilms makes videos about transportation and recently featured Nijmegen. You can see what commuting is like in the Dutch city in the video above.
