Everyone Needs a Home: A View Inside Toronto’s Inclusive Strachan House

This three-storey supportive housing complex meets residents where they’re at.

Submitted by Katie Hyslop, 2 Jun 2017

Toronto’s Liberty Village warehouses once produced goods ranging from weapons to boxsprings and mattress. Today you’re more likely to find cocktails and avocado toast in its warehouses converted into hipster housing and restaurants.

But Liberty Village is also home to Strachan House, a three-storey brick and wood warehouse converted into 83 units and five shelter beds for the city’s growing population of street-entrenched, addicted, and mentally ill people.

Operating for more than 20 years, Strachan House offers residents 24/7 staffing and mental and physical health services, while also providing private rooms, social activities, laundry facilities, communal kitchen, and life skills training.

Think high-end loft living mixed with the best of Single Room Occupancy hotels, in a space where people who had no place in Toronto society can finally find home.
