Stephen Colbert Declares Trump an ‘Enemy of Poutine’

TV host explores tensions between US and Canada over softwood and milk.

Submitted by Tyee Staff, 1 May 2017

“This is the first time anyone has rejected Justin Trudeau’s wood,” said Stephen Colbert.

The U.S. television host admitted that he usually doesn’t focus on international headlines, but did this time because Trump somehow couldn’t find common ground with the world’s most polite people.

Trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada intensified further last week when President Donald Trump announced tariffs up to 24 per cent on imported softwood lumber. The Canadian government was quick to criticize the plan, vowing to sue if needed.

Trump was already upset by Canada’s milk producers lowering prices for dairy ingredients to make them more competitive against the cheaper American imports.

“For those keeping score at home,” said Colbert, “Trump is now a friend of Putin and an enemy of poutine.”
