In Portland, Declaring a ‘State of Emergency’ Powered Solutions to Homelessness

It’s more than a symbolic gesture. BC should take note.

Is homelessness like any other disaster? If yes, then why not declare a state of emergency?

In the final part of a six-part series, reporter Stefania Seccia takes a look at how declaring a state of emergency can get solutions going.

Portland and its county of Multnomah, another West Coast centre with a large homeless population, did just that last year.

In the video above, Portland’s former mayor, Charles Hayes, said declaring an emergency helped the city “jump start projects, cut through red tape, [and] access more funding for shelter and housing.”

As a result, 25,000 individuals were served in one year, a record.

Would B.C. benefit from doing the same? Check out the video to see how it might.
