Meryl Streep Takes a Stand for ‘Principled Press’ in Golden Globes Speech

Submitted by Tyee Staff, 9 Jan 2017

After receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award at this year’s Golden Globes, actress Meryl Streep stressed the importance of media in her acceptance speech (you can watch it in full above, courtesy of the Golden Globe’s Twitter account).

“We need the principled press to hold power to account, to call them on the carpet for every outrage,” Streep said. “That’s why our founders enshrined the press and its freedoms in our constitution.”

Streep made a call for everyone in show business to support the Committee to Protect Journalists because society needs reporting and public support to “safeguard the truth.”

Her support for media came on the heels of criticizing U.S. President-elect Donald Trump for mocking a reporter with a disability, something Trump continues to deny doing.

“There was nothing good about it, but it was effective and it did its job,” Streep said. “I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life.”
