Syrian Yusra Mardini was put to the test when she swam for three hours in the Aegean Sea to push a sinking boat of 19 other refugees to safety.
18-year-old Mardini recently swam again—to represent a Refugee Team of 10 at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Though she did not place after competing in the women’s 100-metre butterfly and freestyle heats, she was thrilled at the prospect of being able to compete at all.
The video by the Olympic Channel above chronicles Mardini’s training and time adjusting to her new life in Berlin.
Language is one challenge, Mardini said in the video, but she’s learning to get by.
“I can speak five words English, two words German, [and] they will understand me,” she said.
