Tyee Poll: Has Canada Been Infected with the Trumpian Sickness? If So, How Do We Respond?

This week, Paul Willcocks warned the American political sickness has infected us.

Recent polls, he wrote, show a divide that threatens our democracy. Most Canadians consider climate change a top issue. But fewer than 10 per cent of Conservative supporters agree. Most Canadians don’t see non-white immigration as a problem. But almost 70 per cent of Conservative supporters believe we’re letting too many visible minorities into the country.

“We’re entering into a post-Trumpian political era in Canada, one where we are divided in ways that don’t allow rational discussion,” he concluded. “One where we no longer listen to one another, and where we see enemies, not people with different solutions to shared problems.”

What do you think? Is Willcocks too gloomy? And if he’s not, what’s the best way to bridge the divide before the October election?
