Personal data we collect

Further to the provision of the B.C. Personal Information Protection Act and federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), personal information is kept confidential by The Tyee and will not be sold, traded, released, shared or distributed to any other individuals, organizations or agencies without prior consent or notification. Personal information is information about you that identifies you as an individual, for example, your name, email address, telephone number or mailing address. The only data we collect from visitors to our website is that which is provided voluntarily by the visitor when they complete or submit a form on our website.

We may collect data from visitors to our website in order to collect feedback on how our site is serving our visitors. This data can include IP address, pages viewed, duration of site or page visits, type of device used to access the website, whether a visitor is new or returning, device location and URLs that refer visitors to our website. The service that collects this visitor data may share it with additional third-party tracking services.

Use of third parties for contributions and billing information

If you make an online donation via credit card or contribute via chequing account, we won’t store your billing information in our systems. Instead it’s collected and processed by trusted third-party service providers–Stripe, Recurly, PayPal and iATS Payments–who either process your one-time gift or store your data securely to be processed on a recurring basis (depending on the frequency you select).

All financial partners we work with are Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) compliant and have resources dedicated to maintaining security and confidentiality.

Data sharing, protection and rights

Physical, electronic and managerial measures have been enacted to ensure the integrity of personal information and to protect it from misuse, loss or alteration. All information submitted to The Tyee is only available to employees or sub-contractors on a need-to-know basis and who are bound by agreement with The Tyee to keep the information private. Email addresses are only used for the purposes of Tyee-related correspondence or comment moderation.

For users who complete a subscription or contribution form on our website, we store the personal information they provide in their user profile within our customer relationship management system and/or email newsletter system indefinitely. All authorized users of these systems at The Tyee can see, edit or delete this personal information at any time. Personal data may be stored on servers located outside of Canada.

The Tyee will not disclose your personal information to any third parties other than to a Tyee staff or contractor except in accordance with the terms of this Privacy Policy and/or to comply with legal requirements such as a subpoena or court order.

Users may request to know what personal information we have on file for them and may request that we delete their personal information at any time by emailing our Privacy Officer at privacy[at]thetyee[dot]ca.
