There’s a special kind of joy in watching a young person get hooked on a book. Maybe it’s the first one they’ve raced through on their own, a story where they recognize something of themselves and feel a sense of belonging, or one that draws them into a life completely different from their own. Sometimes, it’s simply the book that makes them want to pick up another. Teachers get to witness those moments every day.
To celebrate World Teachers’ Day, Tyee readers can enter to win one of six Canadian books for kids and teens in a giveaway sponsored by the BC Teachers’ Federation. This year’s selection includes stories about growing up, finding your place, taking action and navigating a changing world:
- Is There a Boy Like Me? by Kern Carter — signed by the author
- Free Piano (Not Haunted) by Whitney Gardner — signed by the author
- Little Sanctuary by Randy Boyagoda — signed by the author
- The Runaway by Nancy Vo — signed by the author
- You Can Be an Activist by Charlene Rocha and Mary Beth Leatherdale
- Alone Together: A Curious Exploration of Loneliness by Petti Fong
Celebrated every Oct. 5, World Teachers’ Day was established by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, in 1994 to recognize teachers and the important role they play in the lives of students and communities around the world.
Here in B.C., teachers work every day to help young people learn, grow and feel supported at school. They introduce students to new ideas, encourage their interests and help them build the skills and confidence they’ll carry with them long after they leave the classroom.
Is there a teacher who made a difference in your life? World Teachers’ Day is a great time to reach out and say thank you. Be sure to use #WorldTeachersDay and tag @bcteachersfederation.
The BC Teachers’ Federation thanks the Vancouver Writers Fest for providing these books. Enter to win below.
