Tyee Poll: Are You in Favour of Proportional Representation?

As the B.C. government looks to hold a public referendum on electoral reform next year, there is the possibility that the province will move past the first-past-the-post system.

The popular alternative is proportional representation, the electoral system used in many European countries. Some believe this system is more democratic, as it will allow smaller parties with significant votes a seat in government.

However, proportional representation has its pitfalls, argues Bill Tieleman in his latest Tyee column.

“Adopting a proportional representation electoral system would potentially open the doors of the legislature to far-right politicians and their abhorrent views.” One example Tieleman gives is Germany, where the far-right, anti-Islam, anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany won 13 per cent of the public vote and 94 seats.

We’re wondering what you think.

Are you in favour of proportional representation in B.C.?
