California actress and cartoonist Lela Lee's Angry Little Girls cartoon has become an underground phenomenon since she created her first animated short Angry Little Asian Girl ten years ago.
Lee conceived of the project after viewing offensive and chauvinistic cartoons in a festival of animation, according to a web site account. Funneling her rage into art, Lee began creating her alter-ego that same night, using Crayola markers and typing paper . . . she produced the first episode of Angry Little Asian Girl (ALAG).
The response to her short film led Lee to realize that both Asians and non-Asians understood and embraced the underdog spirit of ALAG. So she created additional characters from different cultures and changed the name to the more-encompassing Angry Little Girls.
