BC Business (Dec)

Cover boys Monty Burns and Smith--err, Jimmy Pattison and Nick Geer front an interesting story on the ins and outs of mentorship. In a bid for sartorial subtlety, Jimmy foregoes his signature ass-ugly bowtie, but still manages to appear abruptly airlifted from a distant, fashion-famined nation. The mentoring feature tours the biz heavies--from QLT to Palmer Jarvis to Electronic Arts--to divine the art of mentoring from how they coach and who's coached them. Strangely, the story that follows on mental disorders common to the corporate world neglects to mention sycophantism. From the mag's who'd-have-thunk department: "Meganuptials" in the Indo-Canadian community are behind a boom in large banquet halls, sufficient for the 1,000-person guest lists. Denny Boyd comes up with an alarmingly cool idea: Poet Laureate George Bowering for Senator! An ups-and-downs profile of a local comedian delivers the penetrating insight (punchline?) that its subject "is feeling awesome." A story on the chairmen of BC's top public companies literally pierces the old boys' network, only to leave the most obvious question unasked: Where is the elusive X chromosome to be found? Memo to AD: The feature photospreads are sometimes breathtaking. Why does the table of contents continue to resemble a circa-1988 PTA newsletter? Bcbusinessmagazine.com

Modern Dog (Winter)

Pam Anderson does her damnedest to smolder on the cover, but here's the real news: The brunette-heavy Modern Dog has now featured two blondes on the cover, in a row. What's next, a gay dog owner!? (Better yet for cover concepts, a gay pooch. Word is Jack Russells are quite swish.  Maybe a well-leashed fetish model in tow?) Shop here for Vuitton-inspired carriers and rhinestone collars for your Judy Garland nights. This issue debunks myths and answers burning questions. Stanley Coren tells you how playful your breed is and why. The rules of "tug" are explained: It's all about communal feasting. Turns out, there is actually a rationale for canine clothing. And no, Crest is not the toothpaste of choice for poor Ursula. Moderndogmagazine.com

Adbusters (Jan/Feb)

Systems theory gets a stiff kick and then a heart transplant in this issue. What's the story? Feel-good culture feels bad. Only collective action effects big-time change. Not only does the mag carry forward a thematic thread of "systematically distorted information"--it's got a literal cover-to-cover hole to string it through, resembling the one boring through our presumably compromised brains. An introductory essay powerfully questions the ways ideology is a one-way ticket for taking leave of our senses. The editorial spreads culminate with a sprawling argument for a "Media Carta" to reclaim and overturn our media-saturated environment. That's your discomforting sense of smallness on the line; will you accept the charge? The petition is calling you: www.mediacarta.org. Adbusters.org

Next week: Vancouver Magazine's annual Power List. Who's in, who's out--and why the heck did they include ______ but forget ________? Let us know your thoughts and leave your comments below!
