Will the NDP’s Snap Election Decision Affect Who You’re Voting for?

Premier David Eby called a snap election on Sept. 22. He said the reasons had to do with the need to establish a strong mandate to counter U.S. President Donald Trump’s sovereignty threats and tariff policies, and to protect British Columbians. The decision followed quick on the heels of the resignation of then-B.C. Conservative Leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay on Sept. 20.

For a moment, it seemed like the B.C. Conservatives would be left in chaos, allowing the NDP an easy path to victory. Instead, after Findlay resigned, seven MLAs who’d left the BC Conservatives for the newly formed CentreBC “scampered back.” The result? The right is not nearly as fragmented now as it was on Sept. 22.

Calling a snap election during a municipal election campaign has not proved popular with municipal council candidates.

Polls show voters may not have liked it much, either. As of Sept. 25, the B.C. Conservatives were polling at 43 per cent, and the NDP at 35 per cent. While that’s evened out to a respective 44 per cent for the Conservatives and 42 per cent for the NDP, the percentage of undecided voters has nearly doubled from eight per cent in 2022 to 15 per cent in 2024.

Given this, The Tyee wants to know how the snap election call has affected your voting plans.
