Know Your BC Ridings? Take This Quiz

Use Tyee's election guide to find answers, get informed, and perhaps win a prize package.

Quick question: Which B.C. electoral district boasted the highest voter turnout in 2009?

Answer: Delta South, where 68.6 per cent of registered voters can be proud of making it to the ballot box last election. At first blush, this fact might seem like something only political geeks and data heads should care about. But it's intelligence that could ultimately help guide candidates shape their campaigns in the upcoming provincial election. For that reason too, voters are wise to be informed.

How, for example, will election campaigns differ in wealthier districts? What will this year's candidates offer the force of nuclear families in Surrey-Cloverdale? And how might election contenders best capture the lonely hearts of Victoria-Swan Lake, which boasted among the highest percentage of single people in the province in 2006?

That's the kind of information to be found in The Tyee's BC Election Map and Guide, a district-by-district source for election issues and action. Updated each day until election day, it contains demographic tidbits, candidate information, Tyee stories related to the districts, and more.

This is a live resource, and we're updating it as quickly as we can. When candidates create Twitter pages and websites, we'll add them as soon as we find them. When new information breaks in a district, we'll link to it. But we can't do it alone. You're our best intelligence -- tell us what's happening in your district. Email us here. And thanks to those who've helped us out so far.

To help you explore the map and guide, and get to know the districts a bit more, we've put together a quiz. Some of the answers may be intuitive, but you'll need to search a bit to make sure you've got the right answer. And of course, a prize is at stake! (A prize beyond knowledge, that is.)

The rules are simple: Using the The Tyee's BC Election Map and Guide, match the districts listed below with the list of facts that follows. Email the answers to our election editor here, along with some contact information so we can reach you. Your email or phone number is fine.

If you answer all the questions correctly, we'll enter you in a draw to win a package of great reads: The Truth About Canada by Mel Hurtig, Sanctuary Line by Jane Urquhart, and The High Road by Terry Fallis -- all signed by the authors.

A final hint: When it comes to the quiz, the "Did You Know?" section on each district page is a good ally...

Ready? Go forth into your province, and find the answers. (At the bottom of the map page, you'll find a list of all the district to click on.)

The eight districts to be matched are: North Coast, Cariboo-Chilcotin, Peace River North, Vancouver-West End, Kamloops-North Thompson, Surrey-Green Timbers, Parksville-Qualicum, and North Vancouver-Seymour.

1) This district led the charge against the harmonized sales tax in the 2011 referendum, with the highest percentage of "Yes" votes to extinguish the HST.

2) This district could be considered the wisest, with the highest percentage of senior residents according to the 2011 census.

3) This district had the lowest percentage of census families with children age 24 and under in 2011.

4) This district had the absolute lowest voter turnout in the 2009 B.C. election.

5) This district is so BC Liberal (and Social Credit) loyal, the last time an NDP candidate won was in 1972.

6) In the 2009 election, the race in this district was so close that an initial count found the NDP candidate the victor, though the BC Liberal was later determined to have won.

7) This district's incumbent MLA was a veterinarian before entering politics.

8) This district had the highest number of residents identifying as aboriginal in 2006.

Matched them up? Send your answers to The Tyee's election editor here, and if we draw your name from the pool of readers who answered correctly, we'll send you our book package. It includes signed copies of The Truth About Canada by Mel Hurtig, Sanctuary Line by Jane Urquhart, and The High Road by Terry Fallis. [Tyee]
