The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Embattled Bev Oda stepping down as MP

OTTAWA -- Bev Oda, the embattled minister of international co-operation, is stepping down as an MP at the end of this month.

In a statement on her website, Oda said she handed in her resignation two weeks ago, giving up the southern Ontario seat she has held for eight years.

Oda has come under increasing scrutiny for her spending practices and accountability.

Most recently she drew fire for insisting on staying at a posh hotel during a trip to London, and charging taxpayers the equivalent of $16 for a glass of orange juice.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued a news release today praising Oda's hard work and dedication.

Before she was named to the international development post, Oda was the minister for Canadian Heritage.

    Amen, alive - who's next?

James Moore would not be missed, nor Monsieur Baird, nor Peter Kent. Stephen Harper would only be missed by the oil patch and his fundamentalist church. It could not happen too soon if we want to live in a sustainable democracy.

    golden parachute

I wonder what plum patronage position Ms Oda will parachute into. Mr Harper seems to have a special EI program running for Conservatives, so perhaps Ms Oda can join Chuck Strahl on the Security Intelligence Review Committee.

    Say what?

An election fraud scandal involving deliberately sending people to the wrong place in order to frustrate voters and thereby suppresses the opposition vote gets you nothing, and you fire Oda for a $16 glass of orange juice makes you seem like you are showing leadership? Harper should be gone as well.
