Officials fear branches could be weapons at G20

Saplings are the latest victims of the G20 summit.

Police say that after dismantling garbage cans and mail boxes, small trees are being uprooted around the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

It's the area where the meetings of world leaders will be held June 26-27.

Security officials fear that tree branches could be used as weapons by demonstrators.

The trees are being hauled away until the summit is over, then they'll be replanted.

    In hand-to-hand combat

In hand-to-hand combat anything can used as a weapon. It amazes me that when one goes thru an airport security system, pens and pencils are ignored. As for the cops/security people taking out saplings and branches, I guess they have to justify their actions cuz of the $ 1biilion for security. Next; remove those pesky pigeons, they might want to 'dive-bomb' some dignitaries

    Gong show

This security scenario for these two summits make the security at the olympics seem like a bargain. They are so over the top that one could almost certify the security forces as insane.

One has to wonder whether this over the top emphasis on security is to protect the dignitaries or some politician's egos.

    Democratic Trust

    About The Hook

As British Columbia and other jurisdictions consider allowing online voting, can it be made secure enough that people will trust it? Will it encourage more people to vote? But if something goes wrong, will it further erode people's confidence in their democracies? And what role is the media likely to play in shaping the debate?

These are among the issues to be considered at a May 26 discussion that Fair Voting BC and PartyX are hosting at The Hive in Vancouver. I'll be on the panel, along with UBC Law's Fathima Cader and SFU computer scientist Steve Wolfman. The results and recommendations are to inform the two organizations' public positions on online voting.

Meanwhile join me and other contributors on The Hook as we bring you the latest from B.C. and across Canada.
