Mammoth Studios owner a top BC Liberals donor

Dollars and sense dictated Premier Gordon Campbell’s campaign tour stop to Mammoth Studios in Burnaby last Friday.

Mammoth and North Vancouver’s North Shore Studios are owned by Bosa Development Corporation, which donated $80,800 to the B.C. Liberal Party between 2005 and 2008. That’s far more than the $16,247.50 given by the David McLean-owned Vancouver Film Studios. That’s the same McLean who chairs CN Rail, which privatized BC Rail and gave the Liberals $132,160 since 2005.

The McLean lot is the nearest film and TV “factory” to the headquarters of the NDP, who allege Campbell’s sale of BC Rail was corrupt. A Campbell visit to Vancouver Film Studios would’ve been a gift to the NDP.

The Bridge Studios on the Burnaby side of Boundary road were sold by B.C. Pavilion Corporation in 2007 to Larco Investments. The Liberals have since received only $5,525 from the Bridge and $5,500 from Larco owner Amin Lalji.

Back to Mammoth. It’s located in the new Burnaby-Lougheed riding where Liberal Harry Bloy is seeking a return to Victoria. Bloy won the old Burquitlam riding by just 372 votes in 2005. Fifty-eight percent of Burnaby-Lougheed is Burquitlam. The rest was carved from Burnaby Edmonds and Burnaby North.

Liberals, the film unions and the Tysoe report

What I would like to see is some investigative reporting into the Tysoe Report of a year or two ago wherein the justification to break the only substantial film union was manufactured by Judge Tysoe in a paid hit job commissioned by people like the local studio owners.

    Democratic Trust

    About The Hook

As British Columbia and other jurisdictions consider allowing online voting, can it be made secure enough that people will trust it? Will it encourage more people to vote? But if something goes wrong, will it further erode people's confidence in their democracies? And what role is the media likely to play in shaping the debate?

These are among the issues to be considered at a May 26 discussion that Fair Voting BC and PartyX are hosting at The Hive in Vancouver. I'll be on the panel, along with UBC Law's Fathima Cader and SFU computer scientist Steve Wolfman. The results and recommendations are to inform the two organizations' public positions on online voting.

Meanwhile join me and other contributors on The Hook as we bring you the latest from B.C. and across Canada.
