Do You Know a Creative Force? Tell Us Who!

The Tyee is launching a new project that profiles innovative people using their creativity as a force for good.

David Beers is the founding editor of The Tyee and serves as current editor-in-chief. Jeanette Ageson is publisher of The Tyee.

We all know and admire super creative people in our lives and communities. Whether they paint murals, code software or design gear, what happens when one of these dynamic thinkers takes a hard look at a societal challenge — and a light bulb goes off? Eureka! Positive changes in the lives of others.

Suddenly, more people have access to nutritious food. Or esteem-building mentoring. Or knowledge about their own language and culture. Or greener neighbourhoods. Or... the sky’s the limit for creative thinkers with a social conscience.

The Tyee wants to honour such breakthroughs and the British Columbians who make them happen. So we’ve created a new project called Creative Forces.

And we need your help to make this work.

We’ll unveil our first person to wear the badge later today, when we publish the latest edition of the Weekender. You’ll meet someone who used their brilliance to invent a program that helps young people see their potential to pursue science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Our Harrison Mooney spent time in their lab and you’ll listen in on their free-flowing conversation.

Who is that very first Creative Force in The Tyee? Come back at 5 p.m. today to find out! (That’s when, on Fridays, we launch the latest edition of our arts, ideas and culture section, the Weekender. There’s a Weekender newsletter, too. Subscribe for free.)

Starting now, every first Friday of the month will be Creative Forces day on The Tyee. We’ll profile a person who not only is creative in their field — be it arts, technology, business, advocacy, you name it — but has used their creativity to make something that is having a tangible, positive impact on others.

So here’s where you come in, dear Tyee reader.

We are counting on our cool and connected audience to help us identify Creative Forces throughout B.C. We’ve created a handy form that’s fast and easy to fill out.

Please think about who fits our criteria in your circles and help us “crowdsource” great candidates.

We’re also seeking ally organizations to help us canvas for creative solutions makers among us. First aboard is CreativeMornings/Vancouver, our community partner for this series, who will feature a Creative Forces spotlight onstage at their monthly breakfast events and invite the creative community to nominate the next honouree. And next year we plan to collaborate on a special event to showcase some of the most impactful Creative Forces in the province.

Tune in to The Tyee this evening to learn who we’ve named our first of many Creative Forces. Keep an eye out for the Creative Forces in your world. And save the link to our form that lets you tip us off to who we should next profile.

Together, let’s get creative. [Tyee]
