Just under a year ago, a battle in a Burnaby Mountain conservation area began.
Mayor Derek Corrigan launched legal action against Kinder Morgan for cutting down a small stand of "ecologically significant" trees, while a small group of young activists pitched a land-defending camp opposing the company's pipeline survey work. Over a few short months, that camp escalated into the Burnaby Mountain showdown that saw over 100 Trans Mountain pipeline expansion opponents arrested.
By then filmmakers Zack Embree and Devyn Brugge had already released the above short film Directly Affected, which gives voice to a diverse cross-section of experts, residents, fishers and farmers rooted along the proposed pipeline route. The team is now taking the film across Canada, and raising funds to produce a nation-wide version of the film that uncovers stories about Energy East.
They aim to release the new Directly Affected chapter ahead of Canada's 2015 federal election. You can support the film here.
