Hundreds of women come forward to join RCMP harassment class-action lawsuit

VANCOUVER, B.C. -- Hundreds of current and former female Mounties have come forward to join a class-action lawsuit alleging harassment within the ranks of the RCMP.

The lawsuit -- filed by 19-year RCMP veteran Janet Merlo -- will be heard in B.C. Supreme Court starting Thursday.

Merlo's lawyers expected dozens of other women to come forward after Merlo filed suit in March but attorney Jason Murray says more than 200 people have contacted his firm to join the lawsuit.

Murray says the allegations range from women passed over for promotions to accusations of sexual assault, and they come from across the country.

Merlo's is one of several lawsuits filed against the national police force by women who say they suffered abuse and harassment on the job, including a suit filed by the former spokeswoman for the missing women task force.

Cpl. Catherine Galliford is suing the RCMP in a separate case claiming she suffered post-traumatic stress because of harassment.

    I wonder

just how many men could use some or all of the same criteria that is being applied to this/these case/s?

oh quite a few no doubt

The type of sexual sadist attracted to that kind of work frequently enjoys degrading men as well as women, I think the boots have something to do with it.

Basically, the type of people who apply for such a position is likely the type who are on a "powertrip" all along!

    jumping ship

I think those hundreds of women want to get out of the RCMP. Who could blame them. But mature women, highly trained, walking around for years (one of them for 19 years! ) with a bullet proof vest, a gun, a taser and pepper spray, behaving just like their male partners, are only now coming out claiming sexual harassment at work? This is highly suspect (after all they are RCMP! ) and probably has very little to do with reality. However it might get them sympathy by a large segment of the public and of course a handsome financial settlement.

    The women have, for years

The women have, for years suffered from harassment but finally , individually decided it was time to tell their side of the story.women for years have known that to raise such issues, immediatly bring out the comments about its her faiult, or she imagined it. To publically inform us that they have had ad vances from other members, usually senior takes a lot of guts and I applaud them for doing so

    sexism

And people say sexism is no longer a problem and women have achieved equality ... Reading these comments just makes me shudder and this is supposed to be a more aware audience. I feel like I have been reading a Republican blog ... or like I am living the Canadian version of the Handmaid's Tale.

I couldn't agree more...but not all comments are of the variety of a Republican blog, some are unsubstantiated comments coming from those who self-describe themselves with an acronym meaning a snot-nosed egotistical rude twit.

Even in the rough and tumble world of the building trades one would not be able to find the level of sexism as they appears to be in the RCMP. Just where has this organization, the RCMP, been in the last 2 decades when other work places have tackled this problem with harsh punishment. In my work place there is a policy of zero tolerance and immediate dismissal for sexual harassment.

We would be better off having our own police force in BC than the RCMP. We then could expect immediate action to be taken rather than spending millions of taxpayer's money defending a band of rogues.

Lets not forget , the women

Lets not forget , the women are our sisters, mother's and women we know or don't know who have been abused. Let's hold our contempt for them until the courts decide who is right or wrong. When women came back into the military in the early 50's similar things happend. It took quite awhile for things to settle down. They at first were condsidered to be easy targets. Many good women left the forces, and that was sad

    TIP OF THE ICEBURG

Gender harassment is only the tip of the iceburg as the cowboys have always protected their own. We only hear of the few cases where these guys have not been able to cover for each other. Instances of wife beating, violence against the public, harassment of citizens are for the most part covered up and hidden from public scrutiny. The cowboys protect their own first and the law be dammed.

Women in BC have to deal with sexist pigs

Perhaps all those claims of male officers being sexist when out on call may just make sense. Women complain of being victimized again when having to call in the police. The VPD isn't like that are they and what a silly question that is when like birds of a feather you have pigs in a pen.

    there is no situation

that can't be made worse by calling a cop. Regardless of who shows up.

    To serve their own interests
    To protect their pensions...

I'm not convinced any more that we'd be better off with our own provincial police...VPD seems like a collection of sadistic bullies...maybe it has something to do with carrying a gun and wearing big boots???

    I'm shocked!!

Some of these comments are shameful.

There is absolutely no doubt that women have suffered all kinds of harassment from the RCMP, both those employed by them and MANY MANY civilians as well. I am disgusted with the skepticism I see in the comments here! Sexual harassment is insidious and pervades all workplaces. It is most commonly perpetrated on subordinates both female and male (I don't think anyone is doubting that it happens to men as well...), and in a culture like the RCMP in which hierarchy is so fundamental it could reach disturbing incident levels.
But most importantly: SPEAKING OUT ABOUT SEXUAL HARASSMENT AND/OR ASSAULT IS NOT SOMETHING PEOPLE DO FOR FUN!!! Women and men who have been victimized in this way are NOT looking for attention. It is incredibly difficult to tell anyone about these experiences, nevermind involving law enforcement and the courts.
Any of you doubters - I hope you never have to be faced with the dilemma of whether to tell someone that something awful/demeaning/painful happened to you either personally or professionally.

Since when did questions need substantiation?

Hmmm? It's OK for you to make a comment of that nature but not your sworn enemy, the RCMP? Interesting.

Some obviously have no clue about harrassment!

From previous experience, I have been harrassed because of my English accent when younger, for being a university student working at a trade shop so that I could afford to go to school for another year, and later when I was the only female in my department. It numbs you, then you get tough, and in my case it got to the point where I could dish comments right back at the guilty individuals.

Bullies come in all shapes and sizes, and it isn't long before they get really good at bullying and harrassing other people. Cops are already in a position of power, and as they say power corrupts! Often, it is behavious designed to get rid of the person who they don't like working with, and my bet is that bringing this all up is definitely not something that the persecuted actually enjoy doing. In the case of female cops, my bet is that it is for the most part career-ending.

For those jerks who make accomodating comments that are in reality blaming these female cops and excusing their male colleagues, it really would be appropriate if you were the ones being at the receiving end of the abuse. I can tell you that it isn't at all fun, making each day at work something that gradually gnaws at you.

    The harrassment is execrable, yes.

But how much sympathy does one deserve for voluntarily joining a crime family?

In this instance you just learned a different bonding mechanism. Men use it all the time. Oddly enough it can be an integral part of team building where your ability to respond and subsequently fit in are as important as the actual quality of your work.

"Sticks and stones may break my bones but names can never hurt me." That is a lesson every child should learn primarily because verbal abuse can never be completely eliminated in all it's forms and they must have a defensive strategy to deal with however it manifests itself.

Another lesson that some find difficult to learn is that nobody owes you respect. It is up to you to earn it. The sense of entitlement can be a false altar to pray at.
