Quebec and student groups to resume negotiations tomorrow after Montreal mayhem

MONTREAL - Talks between the Quebec government and student leaders are set to resume tomorrow as the two sides attempt to end their increasingly acrimonious battle.

Today's announcement comes after a messy night of violence and rioting in Montreal that ended with 85 arrests and three injured police officers.

The mayhem erupted several hours after an abrupt end to the negotiations between the students and the government on tuition hikes.

Banks and other businesses, cars, and even a police station had their windows shattered by an angry mob that spilled out from a larger crowd of thousands of student protesters.

Education Minister Line Beauchamp is excluding any possibility of backtracking on plans to hike tuition by $325 a year over five years.

Meanwhile, Quebec Public Security Minister Robert Dutil accused one student leader today of condoning violence by taking an ambiguous position regarding vandalism during protests.
